Details of the MBNA1-13 fed batch fermentation illustrate the accumulation of cell mass and farnesol over time. Under these conditions, dry cell weight reached approximately 44 g/L. Farnesol accumulation occurred most rapidly during the growth phases of the fermentation, although farnesol continued to be produced during the non-growth phase as well. The accumulation of farnesol in the growth medium paralleled the overall farnesol accumulation, indicating that farnesol is released from the cells as it is being produced. In this experiment, the total farnesol expressed as a percentage of dry cell weight exceeded 6%.
