N-Acetylglucosamine Hydrolysis to Glucosamine

 

NAG is readily converted to glucosamine by acid treatment. With one mole of HCl, 100% conversion was achieved after 2-3 hours at 100°C (Figure 9). Hydrolysis of 100 g of NAG produces about 80 g glucosamine. Moreover, NAG itself is a valuable product with numerous applications in cosmetic, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical areas. NAG is traditionally produced by chemical acetylation of glucosamine.
