Bio-Technical Resources, a fully-integrated industrial biotechnology company, provides innovative solutions for the development and improvement of biotechnology products and processes. Through contract services, BTR scientists and engineers engage in research and development in the areas of strain improvement, gene expression, biocatalysis, bioprocess development, scale-up, pilot-scale manufacturing, and strain and fermentation improvement, optimization, scale-up, and demonstration.


RESPONSIBILITES: Bio-Technical Resources is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to work with supervision as an analytical research assistant supporting teams developing fermentation and biotransformation processes for the production of antibiotics, enzymes, proteins, chemicals, and metabolites. The position involves implementation of HPLC, chromatography, enzyme assays, and gel-based analytical methods. Common tasks include analytical separations and quantitative analyses by: 1) HPLC and column chromatography including affinity chromatography, IEX, HIC, and SEC; 2) spectrophotometric enzyme assays; 3) sample preparation and extraction; and 4) basic antibody and protein analyses, using ELISA, protein extraction, protein concentration assays, SDSPAGE, and Western blot.

QUALIFICATIONS: A BA, BS or MS in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering. In addition to a background in chemistry, the successful candidate will have a strong understanding of microbiology. The candidate must: 1) be able to follow direction, and once trained, execute tasks with minimal direct oversight from a supervisor; 2) be willing to learn new techniques; 3) have the ability to concurrently handle multiple tasks while working in a fast-paced environment; and 4) have superior attention to detail and good mechanical skills. Experience with HPLC hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, and/or willingness to learn hardware support, is required. Some experience with GC is desirable. The candidate must be organized and capable of keeping a reliable notebook, as well as, paper and electronic records of experiments.

EXPERIENCE: One to three years of work experience post-degree.
